Today, there is so much confusion on what it means to be a man. In the Bible, we find numerous accounts of wisdom passed down from one generation to the next. One such instance is when King David, nearing the end of his life, imparts his wisdom to his son Solomon. This story, found in the book of 1 Kings 2:1-9, provides great insights into what it means to be a man according to biblical principles.

The Charge

As David’s time on earth draws to a close, he calls Solomon to his side. He begins by acknowledging the inevitability of death, saying, “I am about to go the way of all the earth.” He then charges Solomon to “be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires” (1 Kings 2:2-3).

Practical Lessons about manhood:

Strength and Courage: David tells Solomon to “be strong, act like a man.” This isn’t merely about physical strength but encompasses emotional and spiritual strength as well. It’s about having the courage to face challenges, make tough decisions, and stand up for what’s right (1 Kings 2:2). This aligns with Joshua 1:9, which states, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Obedience to God: David emphasizes the importance of walking in obedience to God and keeping His decrees and commands. This highlights the necessity of spiritual discipline and a commitment to living according to God’s word (1 Kings 2:3).

Wisdom and Justice: David advises Solomon to deal wisely with Joab and Shimei, who had wronged him in the past. This teaches the importance of wisdom in leadership and the pursuit of justice (1 Kings 2:5-9).

Kindness and Loyalty: David asks Solomon to show kindness to the sons of Barzillai, who had been loyal to him. This underscores the value of loyalty and the importance of repaying kindness with kindness (1 Kings 2:7).

Responsibility and Legacy: David reminds Solomon of the promise God made to him, that if his descendants live faithfully, they will always have a successor on the throne of Israel. This speaks to the importance of living responsibly and leaving a positive legacy for future generations (1 Kings 2:4).

David’s charge to Solomon provides timeless wisdom on what it means to be a man. It’s about strength, courage, obedience to God, wisdom, justice, kindness, loyalty, responsibility, and legacy. These qualities, while directed at Solomon, are applicable to everyone, regardless of gender. They provide a blueprint for living a life of integrity, faith, and honor.

Let’s strive to embody these qualities in our daily lives. Act with strength and courage, walk in obedience to God, exercise wisdom and justice, show kindness and loyalty, and live responsibly. Together, we can create a legacy that honors these timeless principles. Take the first step today to make a difference.
